The Greenbrier Resort

This luxury resort has operated here since 1778. In its current form, decorated in the 1940s by maximalist decorator Dorothy Draper, the Greenbrier offers a unique respite in the hills of West Virginia. But an important secret was kept hidden from the public here. Below the hotel, a bunker was built in the Cold War era to house the entire U.S. Congress in the event of a nuclear war so that the U.S. government could continue to function! The secret was uncovered by a reporter in 1992, and soon after, the public could tour the once-secret bunker. The only picture allowed is in a basement hallway just before you enter. The bunker tour was well worth the detour into West Virginia!
